An Open Garden, but a missed opportunity!posted: 14/4/2008 at 21:46:46
Recently we attended the National Gardens Scheme’s annual Devon County Meeting, where owners of gardens that open for that charity are briefed for the coming season, and enjoy a few sandwiches and a good natter with other garden openers. Carol Klein, the well known TV personality, is a North Devon garden opener, and one of only a handful of TV gardeners that I take the time to listen to.

This year the guest speaker for the Devon County Meeting was, errrr, Carol Klein…… Unfortunately, so we were told, Carol cancelled at the last minute as the BBC wanted to do some filming on the same day...... She'd been booked for some time and lots of garden openers were very disappointed! Another valiant speaker did fill in at the last moment, but his talk on bulbs and corms was a bit basic....

At the meeting we took the opportunity to buy an Iris confusa Martyn Rix for the scree slope at the edge of our Kitchen Garden - there's always a bring and buy plant stall that pays for the hall and the sandwiches, so offsetting any costs and not eating into any funds destined for the NGS charities - Devon gardens raised over £77,000 last year!
