What’s in an NCCPG posted: 6/4/2008 at 18:21:34
We did have one of our rare days out recently at the North Devon group of the NCCPG. We went along as guests of a friend who's also a National Gardens Scheme garden opener (The Water Garden, near Winkleigh – well worth a visit ! ), though it turned out we knew quite a few people there anyway.

So what is the NCCPG – without being too high handed with those shy people who only visit garden centers……, it’s the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens.

After coffee Kevin Hughes from Heale nursery talked on Trilliums and other Woodland Plants. And a good lot of information was planted by Kevin! Following on was a walk round Marwood Gardens (where the meeting was held) with the head gardener in glorious sunshine, a good lunch and then a talk by Barry Starling about seed collecting in Japan. It seems an interesting programme for the rest of the year (mainly garden visits to private gardens locally) and we might even join. David's only reservation is that they seem to do nothing for the conservation of gardens!

A week on and we did join the NCCPG and are looking forward to the next meeting in May. However, the contact I was given at the meeting for swamp cypress didn't bother to even phone back as promised, even though I wanted to purchase ten trees. A lot of good she was!!!!
